Summer brings two things: beautiful weather and unwanted guests. There is nothing worse than trying to sleep while hearing the high-pitched buzz of a mosquito near your ear.
Chemical sprays smell bad and only work temporarily. The only permanent, non-toxic solution is a physical barrier: The Fly Screen (Mosquito Net).
But if you search online, you are bombarded with options. Rollers, pleats, velcro, magnets… which one do you need? And do you need to drill holes in your PVC windows? (Spoiler: No).
In this guide, I will break down the types and show you how to install the most popular DIY option: the Magnetic/Adhesive Screen.
Part 1: Choosing the Right Type for You
Before you buy, you need to know what fits your window. Here is the quick breakdown:
1. Velcro Tape Nets (The Budget Option)
- What is it? A simple mesh sheet stuck to the window frame with double-sided sticky tape (hook and loop).
- Pros: Extremely cheap ($5-10), invisible, takes 5 minutes to install.
- Cons: The adhesive often fails in high heat; difficult to clean; looks a bit “temporary.”
2. Magnetic Frame Kits (The Best DIY Choice)
- What is it? A mesh net held in place by a flexible magnetic strip frame.
- Pros: Looks professional, removable for cleaning, no drilling required, wind-resistant.
- Cons: Slightly more expensive ($20-30).
3. Fixed Aluminum Frames
- What is it? A solid metal frame that you assemble and clip onto your window.
- Pros: Very durable, permanent solution.
- Cons: Requires precise measuring and assembling; harder to store in winter.
4. Roller Shutters
- What is it? A mechanism like a blind that pulls down.
- Pros: Premium look, convenient.
- Cons: Expensive and usually requires professional installation or drilling.
Part 2: How to Install a Magnetic Fly Screen (Step-by-Step)
We will focus on the Magnetic/Adhesive Kit. It offers the perfect balance of durability and ease of installation. It works on PVC, wood, and aluminum windows.
Tools You Need
- The Kit (Mesh + Magnetic Strips + Plastic Corners)
- Scissors
- A Measuring Tape
- Rubbing Alcohol (or window cleaner)
Step 1: The “Surgical” Clean
This is the step everyone ignores, and it is why screens fall off. You are about to stick adhesive to your window frame. If there is dust, pollen, or grease, the glue will fail in a week.
- Clean the frame thoroughly.
- Pro Tip: Wipe it down with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. This ensures a bond that lasts for years.
Step 2: Measure and Cut the Strips
Most kits come with two rolls of magnetic strip:
- Strip A (Grooved): Sticks to the window frame.
- Strip B (Smooth): Sticks to the mesh.
Measure the four sides of your window frame. Cut Strip A to size and stick it around the perimeter of the window frame. Press down firmly.
Step 3: Attach the Second Magnet
Now, take Strip B and place it magnetically on top of Strip A (which is already on the window). Do not peel the sticky backing off Strip B yet!
- Why do we do this? It guarantees perfectly aligned magnets.
Step 4: The Mesh Installation
- Peel the sticky backing off Strip B (which is facing you).
- Take your mesh net and press it onto the sticky frame. Don’t worry if it hangs over the edges; stretch it slightly so it is taut (tight).
- Secure it: Most kits come with a plastic “locking strip” or a PVC cover that snaps on top of the magnet to sandwich the mesh in place. Snap this on now.
Step 5: Trim the Excess
Now you have a fully framed net attached to your window. Use your scissors to trim the excess mesh hanging outside the magnetic frame.
Step 6: Test the Corner
Grab the handle (or the corner tab) and pull. The screen should detach easily thanks to the magnets and snap back into place when you let go.
Installing a mosquito net doesn’t require a contractor or heavy tools. By using a modern magnetic or adhesive frame kit, you get a clean, professional look that keeps the bugs out and lets the fresh breeze in.
Plus, when winter comes, you can simply peel the magnetic frame off and store it under a bed until next year.
