(No Plumber Needed)
Is your current showerhead dripping, covered in limescale, or just looking a bit tired? Replacing your handheld shower unit (often called a “shower handset”) is one of the quickest and most satisfying upgrades you can make to your bathroom.
You don’t need to call a plumber, and you certainly don’t need a toolbox full of heavy equipment. In fact, for most modern showers, you don’t even need a wrench.
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how to swap out your old handset for a shiny new one in less time than it takes to boil a kettle.
What You Will Need
Before you start, make sure you have the following ready. It saves you from running out of the bathroom dripping wet!
- The New Shower Handset: Most fit a standard 1/2-inch thread (universal size).
- Rubber Washers: These usually come with the new showerhead. Do not lose them.
- A Cloth or Towel: To grip the fittings or protect the chrome.
- Pliers (Optional): Only needed if the old one is stuck tight.
Step 1: Remove the Old Handset
First, ensure the water is turned off at the mixer tap. You don’t need to turn off the main water supply for this specific job.
- Hold the shower hose firmly with one hand.
- Twist the old shower handset counter-clockwise (lefty-loosey).
- If it’s stuck: It might be calcified. Wrap your cloth around the metal connector (to prevent scratching) and use pliers to gently loosen it. Once it turns, finish unscrewing it by hand.
Note: Some water will drain out of the hose. This is normal; just let it run into the tub.
Step 2: Check the Hose and Washers
Before screwing on the new head, take a quick look at the hose connector.
- Remove the old washer: There is likely an old black rubber ring inside the hose connector. Hook it out with your finger or a small screwdriver.
- Clean the threads: If there is white gunk (limescale) or old plumber’s tape on the hose threads, wipe it off with the cloth. A clean surface ensures a better seal.
Step 3: Prepare the New Handset
This is the step most people forget, leading to leaks later on.
Take your new shower handset. Locate the new rubber washer that came in the package. Insert this washer firmly into the hose connector (not the handset itself).
Why is this crucial? This rubber ring creates the watertight seal. Metal-on-plastic or metal-on-metal connections will almost always leak without this washer.
Step 4: Screw it On
Now, simply attach the new parts.
- Line up the new handset with the hose.
- Screw it on clockwise (righty-tighty).
- Hand-tighten only: Twist it until it is firm, but do not use pliers. Overtightening can crack the plastic threads of your new showerhead.
Step 5: The Leak Test
The moment of truth.
- Point the showerhead into the bath or tray.
- Turn on the water.
- Check the connection between the hose and the handset.
Is water spraying out the side?
- Solution A: You likely forgot the washer. Check Step 3.
- Solution B: It’s not tight enough. Give it another quarter-turn by hand.
- Solution C: The washer is crooked. Unscrew it, reseat the washer flat, and try again.
And that’s it! You have successfully installed a new shower handset.
It is a simple task, but it makes a massive difference to your daily routine. Better water pressure, a cleaner look, and no more annoying drips—all achieved in under five minutes.
